Award for Battle Area Community Transport chairman

The chairman of a charity has been presented with a civic award for his work in the community.

Colin Harmer, from Battle Area Community Transport (BACT), was given the accolade by Battle mayor, David Furness at the Battle, Telham and Netherfield Town Assembly last Thursday (May 26).

It was in recognition of his work over the years with the charity.

BACT provides regular bus services centred on Battle, Burwash and Ticehurst, travelling to villages, such as Ashburnham, Battle, Brede, Broad Oak, Etchingham, Mountfield and Robertsbridge.

It was founded in 1999 in response for the need for regular transport to include rural areas of the county.

Mr Harmer thanked the mayor for the civic award and said he accepted it on behalf of all the volunteers who helped run the vital transport service for people.

Don Gray was also recognised for his outstanding work in organising Battle’s Christmas lights over many years.

Mr Gray will be presented with his award at a future council meeting, as he was unable to attend last Thursday due to a prior engagement.

At the meeting, residents had the opportunity to hear from the town council, their county and district councillors and Battle MP Huw Merriman.

People heard reports from town council committees. These included one from the environment committee on plans for improvements at Battle Cemetery and North Trade recreation ground and a report by Councillor Richard Jessop, reporting as chairman of the planning and transport committee, informing people of the progress of the Battle Neighbourhood Plan.

There was also a presentation by GeoTourist, explaining a new app available to download which included an audio tour of Battle narrated by Anton Lesser.
