Sam, 16, was chosen for his work as the young person representative on the Seahaven Youth Centre Management Committee, as a youth worker for Seaford Youth Service and his role as a member of an anti-bullying project at Seaford Head Community Project.

He and the other finalists were interviewed by a panel of judges including Peacehaven Community School headteacher Fiona Wright, Newlands School headteacher Oliver Price and the Rev Paul Owen, of St Leonard's Church, Seaford.

They graded the candidates for their involvement in their communities, personality, leadership qualities and their proposal for the use of a 1,500 bursary on offer to the National Lions Club Youth Award winner. Sam will now go on to the district finals and if successful the nationals.

Lions youth officer Derek MacGarvie said: 'In their summing up the judges were full of praise for the candidates and stated that if there were more young people of their calibre working in the community there would be far fewer problems with the youth of today.'
