Award honours the Floral Few

A BLOOMING bright summer was celebrated in Newhaven with the presentation of a coveted regional award.

Judges from South East In Bloom awarded the town third place in their small town category. A certificate was presented by Olympic swimming hero Duncan Goodhew.

The Newhaven In Bloom campaign was organised, as always, by the Newhaven Residents' Committee, chaired by David Fitton.

He said: 'Newhaven in Bloom is pleased to be recognised again this year for helping to make Newhaven town more attractive.

'If our future entries in the competition are to be a complete success, we need more sponsorship from businesses in the town and increased co-operation from the various public bodies.'

In their comments about Newhaven, judges from South East In Bloom recommended that a new initiative was required to boost the floral displays, with input from many sectors of the community.

'At the moment, too few volunteers are battling against too great a problem, but it can be done,' they said.

'Newhaven is a place with a great future.'
