Awards for saving woman's life in stabbing horror

Brave members of the public have been recognised for helping to save the life of a young woman stabbed by a Bognor Regis man.

The eight individuals courageously stepped in when Samuel Reid-Wentworth, of Longford Road, almost killed Lucy Yates last September.

The near-fatal attack took place in the Somerfield store in Littlehampton and saw Lucy viciously stabbed more than 20 times in her neck, face and abdomen.

Those people who came to her aid were presented with national police public bravery awards in a ceremony at the Arun Civic Centre on Tuesday.

They either comforted Lucy, dragged her clear of her attacker, administered first aid or subdued Reid-Wentworth. The ceremony also gave Lucy and her family the chance to thank the individuals.

Reid-Wentworth, 22, pleaded guilty to attempted murder and was detained indefinitely at Broadmoor in February after the court heard he was a paranoid schizophrenic.
