Awards recognise five heroes of Fishersgate

Fishersgate Residents Association, chaired by Jill Lennon, organised a gathering at the Meet-In Place, in Laylands Road, on Sunday.

Residents had nominated five people as ‘community stars’ and awards were presented to four of them, as the fifth could not be contacted.

Adur District Council chairman Carson Albury read out and presented copies of the citation, describing ‘those, sometimes unsung local heroes, who give their time and effort to benefit their neighbours or local area’.

David Donaldson, councillor for Eastbrook, said: “The recipients of this local appreciation were Malcolm Reffold, Caroline Moore, Toni Obi and Kate Arnold. To date, it has not proved possible to contact the fifth person nominated.”

He said the Christmas get-together was ‘an extremely successful gathering’.

“Dozens of residents, together with a crowd of children, witnessed the touching ceremony of public citation for those who had unselfishly donated their time and efforts for the good of the local community,” said Mr Donaldson.

“Then, Father Christmas arrived on his sleigh with presents for all the many children gathered in Laylands Road.

“His task complete, as he drove off through the streets of Fishersgate, followed by many, many children, others came out of their homes in their night attire, accompanied by their parents, all wishing to greet and wave goodbye to Santa.”

Mr Donaldson said: “He was ably assisted by two of his local elves, Ant Evans and his wife, councillor Emma Evans, seeking, of course, a straight road, where he could once again take off and resume his travels through the sky.”
