Back to nature for woodland day

More than 100 people went along to the countryside area north of Rowan Way to enjoy pond dipping, bird watching, helping with tree care, nature trails and willow weaving.

The good weather enabled children and adults to have picnics with their teddy bears surrounded by the sound of skylarks, long-tailed tits, green woodpeckers, reed and sedge warblers, blue tits, great tits, yellowhammers, blackbirds, wrens, and robins.

They were also entertained by a female kestrel hunting very close to where visitors were helping with tree care, a buzzard soaring overhead, and a grey heron, which was being seen off by a crow and a gull.

Friends' press officer Monica Cook said: "Many of those that came to the whole-day event ended up staying for longer than they had planned because they were having so much fun.

"All of the new path has been well received and allows those who have difficulty walking across rough ground to enjoy the brooks.

"Children went home with that wonderful glow that showed how much they'd enjoyed themselves, as well as a selection of nature-related goodies and whatever they'd made with the willow."
