Back to the 80s for trip fund event

Fifteen-year-old Hannah Walker, from 8th Worthing Sea Scouts, must raise £1,700 if she is to attend next year’s World Scout Jamboree - in Kirara-hama, Japan.

In a fundraising effort, she held an 80s disco event at Heene Gallery, Worthing, and collected £500 in the process.

Hannah said: “It was a brilliant evening. Not only did we raise £500, everyone who came had a great time and there were some fantastic outfits. It was a really fun way to fundraise.”

“We had fantastic support from local businesses who donated generously to the raffle, especially Baker Academy Water Sports who donated the top four prizes.”

Next summer, 30,000 Scouts from 150 countries will descend on Kirara-hama to participate in nature exploration, community service and a cultural exchange programme.

Twenty-eight scouts from across Worthing District attended a weekend camp to select the West Sussex County contingent for next year’s Jamboree.

Four were chosen from 8th Worthing Sea Scouts and explorer Scout leader Paul Chaplain could not have been more proud. He said: “This will be the adventure of a lifetime for them, giving them invaluable life skills.”
