When she looked for the bag to pay for her shopping it was gone.

In Morrison in Newland Street, at about 4.45pm another woman who had left her handbag on the trolley hook, had it stolen while she was shopping.

Earlier that day at about 1.30pm at the Co-op store in Rowlands Road, a different woman discovered her purse had been stolen.

Sergeant Ann Gent from Sussex Police said: "Police would ask that people be very security conscious when out shopping and ensure that their valuable, personal items are monitored closely at all times.

"There possible, any purses should be kept securely in a zipped compartment in a handbag, or jacket.

"Bags should never be left unattended."
