BAKER HEADS FLOOD PREVENTION GROUP

Lewes MP Norman Baker has been elected chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Flood Prevention following his active campaigns on flood related issues at both a local and national level.

He also chairs the All Party Parliamentary Environment Group.

Mr Baker is renowned for his active role in pushing for more joined-up thinking in Government with regards tackling flooding and climate change.

He has also worked closely with local flood group, Lewes Flood Action, and the National Flood Forum on campaigns for more comprehensive funding for flood defences from the Treasury in light of figures predicting a 700m funding shortfall over 15 years.

Mr Baker said: 'I will be using this position to continue to do all I can to try and push the government towards a more co-ordinated approach of tackling flooding and related climate change issues.

'Economic models show that money spent on flood defences produces a return six times greater than if the money were not spent so.

'In particular, I hope to be able to put my new role to good use in my campaigns for better funding provision for flood defences.'
