Ban on parking in Bognor Regis will be disaster, claim residents

Angry residents have called a proposed parking ban on a Bognor Regis estate a neighbourhood disaster.

The homeowners in Neville Road say the intention to paint double yellow lines around some of the Glenwood Estate will hamper their everyday activities.

One of them, Holly Connolly, said: "Our daily lives will be negatively affected by the introduction of yellow lines. Our family and friends will not be able to park outside our houses when they are visiting. Transporting babies, young children and shopping will become very difficult.

"These plans have not been thought through properly and appear to be based on inadequate research.

"Residents of Neville Road do not have difficulty finding a parking space and don't want to start having difficulties now, owing to ill-conceived plans by local councillors."

West Sussex County Council wants to bring in the double yellow lines, as well as other parking restrictions, in the area, to overcome problems caused by too many vehicles being left in the residential roads.

Public consultation about the restrictions has now ended.

A council spokeswoman said no formal responses had been received during the consultation. A final decision about the ban was likely to be made in early May.

The intended clampdown on parking has been prompted because of concerns about the amount of parking around the estate, which adjoins the Bognor campus of the University of Chichester.

Buses and emergency service vehicles have found it difficult to get round corners because of the illegally parked vehicles.

Neville Road resident Peter Connolly said: "These proposals will have a significant disruptive effect not only on those of us who will be deprived of on-street parking but also those people who live in the areas adjoining the restricted zone.

"They will suddenly find their streets full of vehicles belonging to people from the restricted zone."

He claimed many households in Neville Road failed to receive the consultation.

He said residents feared their properties would drop in value because would-be purchasers would be deterred from buying homes where they would not be able to park. He called on the council and the university to work together to find a more positive solution.

The university should provide adequate parking for all those who work and study on the site at a cost which would encourage them to park there.
