Bangers are just champion

A SPECIALITY pork-and-honey sausage has earned Bexhill butchers G M Matthews one of just 12 championship titles at the southern BPEX regional butchers roadshow and product evaluation event, recently held at the South of England showground, Ardingly.

More than 160 products were submitted by 21 butchers for assessment by industry experts, and the Bexhill bangers clearly tickled their taste buds.

Gerald Matthews, whose shop is in Turkey Road, was on-hand to collect his trophy as champion of the speciality pork sausage category, as well as certificates for a further four gold and three silver awards for other products entered.

He said: “We are absolutely delighted with these awards. We have been making and selling the pork-and-honey sausage for more than five years. It sells very well and has been successful at previous events, but it’s always good to have it re-evaluated

“All of our staff have input into the products we sell and are always coming up with new recipes.

“In fact we have 38 different sausage varieties on sale at the moment, all of which are made with special care and attention using outdoor bred pork.”
