Bar Jolly Brewers in Worthing is proving a hit with new menu and live entertainment

Turning around the fortunes of a venue is a challenge which is even more testing given these uncertain economic times.

But that’s exactly what Sophie Lush and the team at the newly-revamped Bar Jolly Brewers are doing, having made a significant investment in reviving the pub in some style.

Transforming it from what was a building in need of some TLC into somewhere that’s bright, modern and genuinely welcoming is something they should be highly commended for.

Gone are the worn out, tired furnishings in favour of a smartly-lit bar and comfy sofas nestling in its corners, which have helped created a decent ambiance bolstered with live music nights and even a karaoke evening during the week.

It’s refreshing to see a well-stocked, reasonably priced hearty menu provided by its new management – who say they’ve been given an extremely positive response to the venue’s new look.

For an evening meal, we opted for the recommended deep fried camembert in homemade tomato and herb sauce, which proved every bit as enjoyable as it had been billed as being.

As a vegetarian, I chose the spicy bean burger and homemade chips (very reasonable at just £3.95), which were well-presented and proved especially tasty. It was good to see a number of other options available including a veggie chilli or a cottage pie – which gives it an edge over many venues.

My guest chose the steak (£6.95) which is reportedly already proving something of favourite and met with approval on our night out.

There’s certainly no shortage of alternative options available including spaghetti bolognaise, homemade curry, cob salad and hunter’s chicken to name just a few, plus an additional menu for children.

There’s also a strong lunch menu, offering fresh sandwiches, paninis and a house special, the “lushmyster burger,” and all-day breakfasts among the offerings.

Sadly, we were running short of time so desserts had to be skipped, but with the particularly generous portions of the main food, I’m not
sure we could have managed much more.

This may well give me reason to revisit the venue, which offers a warm welcome, pleasing selection of drinks and live entertainment that its team deservedly hopes will put the bar right back on the map.
