Barbecue raffle helps raise vital funds for Alzheimer’s charity

A WESTFIELD woman raised £115 for the Alzheimer’s Society after reading about the experiences of a Battle man whose wife is struggling with the disease.

Jean Hobson, from Heathlands, raised the funds by holding a raffle during her recent barbecue.

Jean and her late husband Gordon have hosted an annual barbecue for family and friends for more than 25 years.

Jean said: “Over recent years I have put on a raffle, with the proceeds going to charity.

“Last year we donated the money to Macmillan Cancer Support.

“This year, after reading the touching story of Ray Bloomfield’s efforts to raise funds for The Alzheimer’s Society in the Observer, we are donating the money to them.

“We all had a lovely time and were joined by Olympic Torchbearer Eric Hardwick, who bought his torch for us all to see.”

Since the report appeared in the Observer last month, Ray, whose wife Lesley suffers with dementia, has received several bookings into next year from organisations for his talk and film show on his life as a boy in north London during World war Two.

All the donations he receives go to the Alzheimer’s Society.

Any organisations or groups who would like to book Ray for a talk should call him on 01424 777202.
