BARCOMBE UNITED: No, not a football team. It’s a village under threat. Gordon Gurman has run Barcombe Post Office and Stores with aplomb for the past 15 years, to general applause. He has decided to move on. Potential buyers of the business have come and gone, so Gordon started to think about the nuclear option, close the shop and sell the building. On Sunday afternoon, some 250 potential investors packed the village hall to hear about proposals to SOS (Save Our Store). The plan is to form a co-operative or the like to acquire the building. The scheme depends on finding someone to operate the business. Failing that, the investors could run it as a community shop. The response to a call for financial pledges has been overwhelming and offers are still coming in. Another meeting will be held after Easter when those who have pledged will be invited to discuss options regarding the finer points of the scheme.
