One of the longest established shops in the region, the Barnardo’s shop in South Street opened its doors to shoppers in 1996.

The team of 30 volunteers celebrated their success by cutting a specially decorated cake at 12.30pm.

They were joined by John Ellis, head of retail recycling, who opened the shop back in 1996.

Two volunteers, Lorena Whiting and Audrey Groom, received certificates and a crystal rose bowl in recognition of 20 years service, with Barbara Vines celebrating 15 years service.

Barnardo’s shop manager Kay Fisher said: “We are immensely proud of everything that has been achieved by the team over the last 20 years.

“Thanks to the commitment of our volunteers, and the generosity and support of our customers, we have been able to raise much-needed funds to support the charity’s work with children and young people.

“We have a fun and friendly team who have created a lovely working atmosphere within the shop.

“We feel just like a big family. We’ve received lots of unusual donations over the years but one of the biggest surprises was a painting that sold at auction for £600 as well as some old fashioned hand puppets that created a lot of interest. We always appreciate every gift.”

The Chichester shop is open Monday-Saturday from 9am-5.30pm and on Sundays from 10am-4pm. The team always welcome donations of good-quality clothes, books, toys, games, and bric-a-brac.
