The 32 students from St Philip Howard Catholic High School showed they had what it takes to run their own newsroom when they took part in the BBC News’ School Report.

The year-eight youngsters tackled breaking news, big stories of the day plus important local issues they could really get their teeth into.

Beth Keegan and Conor O’Hahl both 13 were given the role of editors and it was their job to make sure their 2pm deadline was met.

Beth said: “I have enjoyed it. It has given us a better understanding of how the news works. We need to be very organised.”

The students were split into eight groups each with a sub-editor as they tackled the day’s news.

Items ranged from the latest news on Pope Francis, dream jobs and important local issues such as bicycle thefts. They also interviewed local parish councillors about future housing in the village as well as quizzing the villagers about their views on housing.

English teacher Andrea Brogan said: “I have been very impressed with the students. They are really getting involved. This year, we have much more of a focus on local news which is great.”
