And in the diamond jubilee year of the cup launched by the late John Cowdray in 1956 it is fitting that there is a Cowdray team competing in the shape of the Cowdray Vikings.

This year John Cowdray’s grandson George Pearson, who holds a two goal handicap is playing alongside the young Sussex player Jack Richardson, South African Chris Mackenzie (six goals) and Argentine Alejandro Novillo Astrada (eight goals).

Cowdray Vikings will play their second match of the tournament for the Midhurst Town Cup on Sunday (June 26).

The Gold Cup final takes place on Sunday (July 17) when tickets at the gates will be £20 each. Before July 1 semi finals and finals day tickets are available at £17.50 each.

The annual cricket match between Midhurst Cricket Club and a group of Cowdray Park polo players takes place on Friday evening, July 1.

Last year the polo players won so there is likely to be determined effort by the cricket club players to even up the honours.
