Battle Mayor supporting charity

One helps young children in East Sussex including the Battle area, while the other uses British expertise to develop education in South Africa.

The idea of the Battle Mayor’s Charity is to use the office of Mayor to bring together the Council and the community in support of locally based causes.

Each year the presiding Mayor will nominate a charity or charities, and will work to organise events and raise money for them.

The Mayor will be supporting Home Start East Sussex, which helps families with children under five who are in need of support, and Tyume Valley Schools (TVS), a Battle-based charity which organises help for about 30 schools in deprived communities in South Africa.

Cllr Kiloh is starting a sponsored slim in aid of the newly launched Battle Mayor’s Charity.

The Mayor, Deputy Mayor and other volunteers will start their slim with a weigh-in at the launch of the charity on Friday October 9. Slimmers will set their own target and be monitored on a weekly basis.

The purpose of the slim is not only to raise funds for the charity but also to encourage weight loss for health reasons.

“Many of us need to lose a bit of weight but we just need an incentive” said the Mayor.

“I hope that the sponsored slim will motivate others to get healthy and raise some money for our chosen causes, Home Start and Tyume Valley Schools, at the same time.”

Margaret’s slim is supported by Weight Watchers but volunteers are free to join other clubs or do it themselves and be monitored at the Town Council office.

Home Start offers free, confidential and non –judgemental advice to families in Battle in their own homes, trying to avert family breakup with all the awful consequences for the children.

Parent volunteers are used, recruited locally in Battle, but it costs money to find and train them. More information is at www.home-start.org.uk.

TVS is looking for funding so that it can recruit and support volunteers from Battle to teach at one of its South African study camps.
