Battle of Britain Spitfires and Hurricanes in Ford flypast

TWO Spitfires and two Hurricanes will feature in a flypast over Ford Airfield tomorrow (Friday), to mark the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

The legendary fighter aircraft will pass above Ford on the final leg of an epic triple mission by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, covering a large part of the country.

They are scheduled to fly over Ford at 4.55pm, although the timings can only be approximate because of weather conditions and operational reasons.

One of the two Spitfires taking part in the tour, P7350, is the oldest surviving airworthy Spitfire and the only one still flying which actually fought in the Battle of Britain.

Sole survivors

The other Spitfire, AB910, flew more than 140 operational missions in the Second World War.

They will be in formation with Hurricane R4118, the only one to fight in the Battle of Britain which is still flying, and Hurricane LF363, the last Hurricane to enter service with the RAF.

The tour is taking in key Battle of Britain fighter bases across eastern England and the south-east, with the final leg ending along the West Sussex coast, above Westhampnett, Tangmere and Ford, before turning north to finish at RAF Northolt in Middlesex.
