The independent school bought the former Yesterday’s World building in Battle High Street when the much-loved tourist attraction closed after 30 years last year.

The building was re-named Martlet House and builders have been hard at work, turning the old museum into a learning environment, ready for the forthcoming exam season. An official opening is due later in the year.

James Dennett, marketing manager at Battle Abbey School, updated the Observer on the progress of the building project.

He said: “The Martlet House development continues at a swift pace with repair and refurbishment to weatherboarding, doors and windows.

“The newer rear building is now complete for the exam season, including desks and chairs for the upstairs exam and conference room where the new windows have
made a huge difference in providing additional natural light.

“Downstairs, the glass brick partition between the café area and the teaching rooms has been completed, and work on the kitchen will proceed over the summer.

“The original front High Street property has had a largely cosmetic face lift, but also needed some more fundamental work, such as the parapet wall, with work undertaken to avoid further water ingress.

“Several of the windows have been refurbished and the entire front of the property has been repainted.

“Our pupils are very excited about the rear facing outside decking and café area, and have suggested a number of interesting ideas we are preparing to have in place for September, when the official opening for Martlet House will be conducted as part of Battle Abbey School’s Open Day.”
