A HARMLESS trip to the beach could have turned into a tragedy had it not been for the quick thinking of two young boys.

Eoghan Lewis, 14, and brother Martin, of Rosslyn Road, Shoreham, joined their friend Luke Pearson, also 14, on a trip to Shoreham Beach.

The happy afternoon could have proved fatal when Eoghan hurt his leg badly in the sea and was unable to make it back to the shore.

But, after spotting Eoghan was in trouble, the quick-thinking youngsters swam out to him and between them managed to drag him out of the water and up the beach, where they used their mobile phone to call Eoghan s mother, Maureen Lewis, a district nurse in Shoreham.

Luke stayed with Eoghan while Martin raced up to the road to flag down his mum.

Eoghan was taken to Worthing Hospital, where he was told he had broken his leg in two places and was fitted with a full cast.

Eoghan said: I just want to say a huge thank you to my brother, my friend and mum for all helping me."

The full story of the rescue can be found in the Herald, August 16.
