The MP was repeating a comment made by fellow TV guest, former police office Peter Kirkham, in reference to Home Secretary Theresa May.

The BBC edited out the comment from the online clip of the show, stating on its Facebook page: “This debate has been slightly edited over the language in a reference to a tweet.”

Since the show aired, Twitter has been flooded by comments from the general public.

Alastair Doughty @EliteStarquake tweeted: “So, Nick Herbert gets away with saying ******* on #bbcdp He was quoting someone else’s tweet. I don’t mind but quite shocking at lunch.”

Matt Taylor @MPRTaylor, tweeted: “Just heard Nick Herbert say ******* live on BBC2. How do I vote for him?”

Mr Herbert has remained defiant and tweeted in response: “Err, I was quoting disapprovingly the former police officer on the prog who used the word about the Home Sec ....”
