The pair were raising money for Rainbows Childrens' Hospice and flew off the pier in a home-made helicopter.

Ms Walsh was put on a spinal board and taken to hospital suffering from a dislocated shoulder and broken arm.

Thanking well-wishers on her Twitter feed she said: "I couldn't have been looked after better by the organisers and medics."

Birdman flights were suspended for approximately 20 minutes during her rescue.

Flyers are not allowed to compete unless a safety boat is in place.
