Be Clear on Cancer is an NHS campaign aiming to increase public awarenesss of the disease.

This week, the main focus of the campaign is ‘Blood in Pee’ – one of the key symptoms in bladder and kidney cancer, which around 30 people in Hastings are diagnosed with each year.

The campaign visited Hastings today (Thursday, February 25) one of the first stops on its five-week tour of England.

Doctors and nurses are sharing vital information about symptoms, taking down case history and handing out leaflets packed full of information in the hope it will help prompt those who need it to seek help.

“We’re often a stepping stone for people to find their way to their doctor,” said Louise Peters, event manager of the campaign’s roadshow stop in Hastings.

“We give people the tools to inform their doctor about how they’re feeling.

“People often go to the doctor and play it down, which they shouldn’t do.”

Medical staff on the stall said they were pleased with the progress so far, especially when handling such a sensitive issue as ‘people are sometimes embarrassed but it’s mainly positive’.

Ian Lavender, star of television classic Dad’s Army and bladder cancer survivor, has offered his full support to the campaign and has joined in warning of the benefits of catching symptoms early.

“It’s a simple message ‘look before you flush’ and make sure you go and see your GP if you notice blood in your pee,” he said.

“Spread the word, someone you know might have this symptom and reminding them to get it checked could save their life.”

The NHS’ Blood in Pee campaign will be in Priory Meadow again tomorrow (February 26).

After this leaflets and information about symptoms will be available from pharmacies around the Town Centre or online at NHS.uk/bloodinpee.
