Be gentle with us, pleads council leader

AS Rother District approaches D-Day for its new constitution council leader Graham Gubby has urged the public to be patient and supportive.

Unlike other councils which have operated pilot schemes, Rother s change in constitution from committee system to leader and cabinet gets no rehearsal.

The last old-style full council meeting will be held on Monday and the new model council up and running next Thursday.

Under the new constitution the full council will now be responsible for adopting policy; the Cabinet for policy formulation and implementation and the three new overview and scrutiny committees for assisting the executive in its functions and for scrutinising and examining its decisions.

Cllr Gubby said: I hope the public will take an interest in what we are doing and the way we have gone about the new constitution.

I believe the non-executive councillors and public will have a greater say in the work of the district under the new system.

He added: I would hope people, even those within my own group, will make every effort to help make things work. And I also hope that whatever our differences, politeness and respect for other people s opinions will be shown.

The first committee to meet under the new constitution will be district services scrutiny on November 5.
