The oil, which was found on April 3, is not hazardous to people or animals unless it is digested.

A spokesperson for Adur and Worthing councils said: “The council immediately arranged for the substance to be tested to confirm what it was, and a clean-up and dispersal campaign was undertaken. It has now been confirmed that the substance is a waxy mineral oil.

“Although the clean-up process is complete, Adur and Worthing councils continue to ask the public to remain vigilant and to contact them should they notice this substance coming ashore again.”
