Beatles producer ‘Hurricane’ Smith lived in Beckley

Norman, who lived in Beckley and died five years ago this March, was the Beatles’ sound engineer for six albums and 14 number 1 hits.

When he died Time Magazine recorded it in their famous ‘Milestones’ section, commenting that John Lennon had nicknamed him ‘Normal’.

He later went on to produce Pink Floyd and even went on to score a number one hit of his own in the USA on his 50th birthday with his song called ‘Oh babe - What Would You Say?’

Norman was in the studio the night at Abbey Road in 1962 for the Beatles’s first audition and claims to have helped them out when they arrived a little unprepared.

The movie showing tonight is called Beatles Stories and is dedicated to Norman. The full length documentary was shown at Odeon cinemas last June.

It features famous people telling their Beatles stories to camera. They include Sir Ben Kingsley, jon Voight, Donovan, Art Garfunkel and others.

Doors open at 6.30pm and the film starts at 7pm.
