'˜Beautiful town' says new clerk

New town clerk, Ms Holly Goring, 33 joined the council last week and was looking forward to her first meeting, the general purposes committee on May 3 followed by the annual statutory meeting on Monday, May 9 when councillors elect the town mayor, deputy mayor and deputy mayor as well as appoint members to standing committees.

Holly, who lives in Bexhill, joined the town council from the British Heart Foundation in London. She had formerly worked for Bexhill-based Rother District Council. She joins Uckfield from her post as policy and governance manager for Tunbridge Wells Borough Council where she had worked for eight years.

What made her decide to apply for the post? She replied: “I love Uckfield’s situation in the heart of Wealden District. It is a very beautiful town set in the midst of glorious countryside. I have lived in East Sussex for more than 12 years and I have often visited Uckfield and thought what an attractive place it is.

“There is a great mix of independent shops and I consider myself lucky to be coming here at an exciting time for Uckfield, particuarly with the changes in infrastructure and construction of a large number of new homes.

“I was really keen to take on a new challenge and I’m looking forward to my first meetings!”

Ms Goring was the unanimous choice of the interview panel whose recommendation was ratified at a full council meeting. She won through from a total of nine applicants. four of whom were interviewed. She replaces former town clerk Ashley Serpis who retired at the end of last year. In the meantime the post has been held by deputy town clerk Christine Wheatley.

At the time the appointment was announced, town mayor Cllr Louise Eastwood said she hoped this would prove a fresh start for the council with the new clerk helping to move things along.”

Although she no longer works for the British Heart Foundation, Ms Goring helps the charity in a voluntary capacity and spend her spare time walking and enjoying the ‘glorious Sussex countryside.” She concluded: “I am here to support the Town Council and its councillors in looking and setting its direction for the future.”
