Beckley School Log Book quote; on the 5th of June 1896 the Headmaster of Beckley School wrote “The attendance has not been satisfactory this week. Several girls are assisting their mothers hop-tying or ‘minding the baby’ and the boys are doing field work. Other children are having a holiday at Hastings and elsewhere. The 1st and 2nd classes are inconveniently crowded and it is difficult to do good work. A new arrangement of classes to be tried next week. The first class will comprise of Standards V,VI & VII. The second class of Standards III & IV. Standard II will make up the third class. This rearrangement will give the Pupil Teacher a class of 40, but she will receive assistance from the Master, who under present circumstances cannot leave his class to overlook the working of the others. While this experiment is being tried there will be some derivation to the usual timetable.”
