Beckley School Log Book Quote: on the 14.5.1897- the then Headmaster Mr W Blackmore wrote “There is now so much field work for women that they are almost obliged to keep the older girls at home sometimes. The boys can earn from 4/ to 5/ a week each; poor people are therefore tempted to keep their children from school. The attendance of the older scholars has, this week been very poor. Only about half of the first class children have attended regularly. All the farmers are anxious to have the hops tied, and the work is likely to continue for another fortnight.”
