Beckley girl Sophie set to help Romanian children

BECKLEY Brownies leader Sophie Phillips will be flying to Romania this summer to help organise a special event for disadvantaged children.

Sophie is able to make the trip thanks to support from Rye and Winchelsea Rotary which boosted her fund raising with a £250 donation.

Having contacted the club last October for funds to help pay for her travelling and living expenses, Tony Evans of Rye Rotary’s Community Service Committee presented Sophie with a cheque for £250, which helped her exceed her target of £800.

This will leave spare cash for her to purchase equipment she and other volunteers will be taking with them to present to the 7-10 year old Romanian girls.

Derick Holman, of Rye Rotary, said: “Guiding was not encouraged under Romania’s communist dictator Nicolae Ceaucescu so there isn’t much of a tradition in this underdeveloped country to be followed.

“The group from East Sussex will be teaching musical, sports and craft skills to the Brownie aged disadvantaged children during the 10 day summer camp.

“Tony Evans said that he was delighted to hand over the cheque for such a constructive venture and asked Sophie to visit the Rye Rotary club after her return to provide a report on the outcome.”
