Beckley pupils meet Local Food Hero

Children at Beckley are researching farming in the Beckley area in a project called ‘From Earth to Plate’.

On March 24 Dickie Dengate, a local apple farmer, and Stephen Jempson, of Jempsons in Peasmarsh, came to speak to them about the importance of buying locally sourced food.

Stephen Jempson talked about the Jempsons ‘Local Heroes’ of which Dickie Dengate is one. He told the class about the importance of buying local products and Dickie Dengate talked about the effect this has on both the present and future of farming.

The children greatly enjoyed the visit and are more aware of issues such as ‘food miles’ and their carbon footprint.
