Benefit claims processed faster than ever before

Lewes District Council now processes claims for housing benefit faster than many other local authorities in the UK.

The average time it takes to handle claims is just 29 days compared to a national average of 34. And, by its own standards, the Council has slashed the number of days taken to process applications from 49 days in June 2005 - a saving of 20 days.

Additionally, more claims are now being decided within 14 days of receiving all information and payments are being made faster once application decisions have been made.

Lead cabinet member for the benefit service, Councillor David Rogers, said: "In a relatively short space of time, Lewes District Council has made a great improvement in the way it handles new benefit claims.

"We are making decisions faster, are paying people more quickly and are dealing with changes in circumstances more promptly.

"We are now focussed on providing a quality, personal service in a timely fashion that meets national standards."

Lewes District Council provides benefits to over 7,000 households and pays out an average 16.2m annually in housing benefits to those with low incomes.
