Ben's fighting spirit leads to awardfor Outstanding Young Person

A 14-year-old with a fighting spirit has been chosen as this month's Outstanding Young Person of the Month Award winner.

Ben Hotton, from Bexhill, who is autistic, was attending a specialist school but developed a few difficulties which resulted in him leaving.

After a period of uncertainty, the bright lad has risen to the challenge of attending Southlands School in Hampshire, and even though everything has been unfamiliar, Ben’s confidence has soared.

Mum Vicky Hotton, who nominated him for the award, said: “Ben has gone from being very anxious and not wanting to leave the house, to growing in confidence and trying out all sorts of hobbies including a triathlon, scuba diving, cycling and a disability ski club. I put him forward for this award as I’m extremely proud of the way he has taken on new challenges.”

The Outstanding Young Person of the Month Award is sponsored by Sussex Coast College Hastings and the Hastings Observer Series and presented to someone aged 18 and under who has excelled in some way.

Justin Rollings, at Sussex Coast College Hastings, said: “Ben should be really pleased with himself. It sounds like he’s really come out of his shell and is confident enough to take on different challenges.”

As part of his award, Ben will receive a complimentary meal for two and £100 is being shared between Special Kids Bexhill and Southern Ski Club for the Disabled.
