Bersted meeting to plan gight against new homes

A special meeting is to be held by Bersted Parish Council to decide how to fight plans for 2,500 more homes.

The extraordinary session will take place at 7pm on March 24 at the Jubilee Community Centre, off Chalcraft Lane.

It will have just one subject on its agenda.

That will see councillors debate the legal advice they have sought about the best way to tackle the proposal for top grade farmland close to the centre.

This site, north west of Chalcraft Lane, has been selected by Arun District Council as a preferred option for development on the edge of an existing urban area. Consultation about the issue continues until April 2.

Cllr Roy Elsey said the parish council had to strongly oppose the latest threat to pour concrete over a large area of agricultural land so soon after nearby site six was approved for housing.

"The time has come now to stop this. We are going to try our hardest to do that," he assured the four protestors at the parish council's monthly meeting on Tuesday.

Cllr Martin Lury said: "We need to put a lot of pressure on Arun not to go for this option because there is a lot of public opposition to it."

Cllr George Short commented: "We really need to bombard the district council with letters and e-mails."

Meanwhile, a small group of residents opposing the idea of a new village being built on their doorsteps are hastily putting together a campaign.

Iain Palot said: "We are looking at having a meeting to get the people of Aldwick, Rose Green and Pagham together somewhere which is not a council building."

Those who attended would be handed the list of 19 reasons why the land should be spared from development which were reported last week.

Another of the campaign group members, Tony Lancaster, said: "We have got to push this big time and we only have a few weeks in which to do it."
