Bexhill Amateur Theatrical Society celebrate 75 years

THERE'S no business like show business and the proof is in the pudding as Bexhill Amateur Theatrical Society (BATS) recently celebrated its 75th Anniversary.

A party to commemorate the occasion was held at the local am-dram group's headquarters in Broadoak Lane, and a large number of society members and guests joined in the celebrations and enjoyed a cream tea.

There was also the opportunity to browse through many albums of photographic records from BATS' previous productions.

Chairman of BATS, Trish Daly, welcomed everyone to the celebration and recalled the beginning of the Society in 1935 and its progress since then.

Trish invited Sheila Harper, the membership secretary and longest serving member of BATS, to cut the celebration cake.

Trish said: "I think we should remember that group of amateur dramatic enthusiasts who got together in 1935 and formed our first committee so that by 1936 we presented our first amateur production 'Road House' on the De La Warr stage.

We should thank all the members, past and present, who continued to believe that there was, and is, a place for amateur theatre in our towns.'

The BATS' next performance is their popular annual open air production, performed in the Manor Gardens, which this year is Shakespeare's, 'As You Like It', from Monday 26th July to Saturday 31st July.

Tickets, which are available from the Bexhill Observer office, Sackville Road, cost 10 for adults and 7 for under 18's.
