Bexhill Christmas lights donation plea

Organisers of the Christmas lights launched a crowdfunding page to raise money for this year's decorations on Sunday (May 1).

Shining Lights is trying to raise £5,000 through a gofundme.com page to go towards the festive decor and switch-on in Bexhill.

Co-director Anna Beale wrote on the site they rely heavily on donations to beat last year’s lights but only £20 has been given so far.

“Last year we managed to raise enough money to bring the sparkle back, bringing to the town 8,000-10,000 people to our big switch on event. It was truly a spectacular evening,” she said.

“We want so much to continue this year upon year making it so special.

“Here’s the thing, to do this we rely heavily on donations in order for this to continue.

“So please if you are as passionate as we are about our town and Christmas and what this does for the local trade then we would be very grateful indeed for any donations even if it’s just £1 it all helps.”

Shining Lights took over the reins of the Christmas decorations from Rother District Council (RDC) for last year’s festivities.

Many business owners and residents were delighted with the results, after some complaints about the council’s efforts, and an estimated 10,000 people turned up to the switch-on in Devonshire Road.

RDC agreed to give Shining Lights £13,5000 and the responsibilty for the Christmas decorations for the next four years in April.

Plans for this year are well underway after buying a 30ft tree from Little Down Farm and More FM is booked to host the switch-on.

Shining Lights also organised the beacon-lighting for the Queen’s birthday and is planning on sorting out bonfire night.
