Bexhill College celebrates sports stars

Bexhill College's Sports Academy held its annual awards with a number of National Champions and a World record breaking rowing team among those receiving honours.

The awards night is organised to recognise the outstanding efforts of the Academy's performers who, even by their own high standards, have enjoyed an exceptionally successful year.

Hastings United starlet Luke Newman won the manager's player and Stephen Purcell winning players' player for the 1st XI football team who ended the season as Champions of Sussex. The second team honours were shared by Sonny Kirten and Rory McGrath.

Even they were outshone by the rowing team who broke the world under-18 100,000m rowing record, a feat which saw them lift the team of the year award.

Hayley Relf won an outstanding achievement award after becoming National College's Judo Champion in the lightweight division.

Vinny Hourihane took the overall individual achiever award, while Tom Hollick won the rower of the year trophy.

The Academy also enjoyed a year to remember in the pool with triumphant performances in both the ladies and men's categories at the National Championships, with Todd Alsop taking home the swimmers swimmer award.

The ladies netball team awards went to Vicki Harmen in the players' player category while Kirsten Paslow scooped the manager's player title.

The newly formed ladies football team enjoyed a successful 1st season and their awards went to Emily Woollet as players' player and Laura Bolton as manager's player.

The rugby team finished 3rd in a very competitive league and the players' player award was won by Chris Stern while Lewis Sewly won the manager's award.

Matt Hellier, who was an ex BTEC student who is now a teaching assistant at the College was part of the crew in the Bexhill Trust Challenger who recently won the inaugural winning Indian Ocean rowing race.

Dave Brown, head of the College's Sports Academy said "It was a great night at the end of a great year. We wanted to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of the students over the past 9 months. There were some outstanding individual and team results this year but everyone has played their part. We are going to push on to try and become even more successful next season."
