Bexhill couple join Milli-Band protest

CAMPAIGNERS from the Bexhill and Hastings World Development Movement joined more than 1000 environmental protestors at Kingsnorth Power Station last week.

Denis Lucey, chairman of the local WDM branch, and his wife Christina, were among those calling for energy secretary Ed Milliband to block plans for a new coal-fired power station.

They wore yellow sashes with "climate change kills" written on. When they reached the Hoo Peninsula site the sashes were torn apart and rejoined to form a long chain around the plant, called a Milli-band.

Christina said: "It was all very peaceful and family orientated. We all gathered in a huge field and from there it was a 2km walk to the perimeter where we were allowed to gather.

"There was a whole mixture of people. A big stage was erected in the feld with a rally afterwards. It was organised by a coalition of environmental organisations, including womens institutes and RSPD and WDM.

"At events like that you can get people looking for a chance for trouble, but there was none of that."

If the power station is built, it will be the first coal-fired station to be built in UK for 30 years. The WDM claim a new coal power station could lead to thousands of people in the developing world losing their water.

Ed Milliband is expected to comment on the situation before the United Nations Climate Change Conference in December.
