Bexhill creative learning centre grant sliced by cabinet

Rother District Council officers recommended approving the full amount Bexhill Hive asked for from its community grants scheme to buy Apple MacBooks and cover 40 per cent of a project manager’s salary.

But cabinet members were concerned about the project’s ‘long term viability’ and the money is not supposed to be used to fund salaries so the grant was cut to £18,000, according to the minutes.

The grant came with two caveats that means match-funding must be gained from Locate East Sussex and Arts Council England, plus there must be a minimum 10-year lease on the new St Leonards Road premises.

Other applications for the grant scheme were granted as per the officer’s recommendations.

Bexhill Cricket Club will receive £4,000 to buy a second-hand mower and the 1st Sidley All Saints Scouts will be given £1,500 to purchase a trailer to carry camping equipment.

Cabinet members also discussed applications for the special Queen’s 90th birthday celebration grant, used to fund parties and commemorations to mark Her Majesty’s birthday.

Brede Parish Council will get £200, Etchingham Parish Council is getting £500, £250 will be given to Fairlight Parish Council, Pett Women’s Institute will receive £125 and Rother Seniors Forum was awarded £400.

The Catsfield Triangle Association will also be given a £500 grant as part of a pot to mark the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings.

The money will be used to support the first annual triangle races in the village which will be 1066-themed this year.

Cabinet agreed the officer’s recommendation to full council to approve its response to the Local Government Boundary Commission for England’s current consultation on the new proposed electoral ward boundaries.

The council will discuss this at the annual meeting on Monday (May 16), where a new chairman and deputy chairman will be appointed, as well as decisions on upgrading parking meters and whether to introduce public speaking at planning meetings or not.
