Bexhill FM goes global

BEXHILL students can be heard across the globe this week thanks to online technology.

As well as using traditional radio methods Bexhill FM, the station set up by the town's young people, broadcast throughout the world using internet streaming.

The station runs for a week every year out of its Bexhill High School base. Students from Bexhill High, St Richard's Catholic College and Bexhill College take part in producing and presenting shows.

Highlights this year have included a wide selection of local bands playing live sets, on air discussion with experts on teenage issues and Jonny Higgins drive-time show where listeners have been invited to phone-in and mimic his 'unique' jingle.

The breakfast show with Richard Harris, the student leader on the project, movie reviews and the lunchtime programme have also attracted a faithful audience. Students have received dozens of emails from members of the public commenting on the station.

The project even has its own official photographer this year, in the shape of 15-year-old Ben Faulkner.

Teacher in charge, Philip Higgins, said: "We have had lots of e mails and encouragement from local people. We enjoy having the live bands because it offers something to the young people of the town."

"The students have been working hard and started preparing this in October," added Richard.
