Bexhill governance review campaigners quiz councillors

Democracy4Bexhill members asked Rother District Council a range of questions on the community governance review and public consultation, which starts on January 9.

The group, which wants as many people to take part in the review as possible, asked what is being done to ensure those without internet access can get involved, how impartial the steering group is and how the consultation would be handled.

The questions were put to deputy leader Martin Kenward before the meeting but he could not attend so Cllr Ian Hollidge took them in his absence.

Cllr Hollidge said they are aware of the issue with online information not being accessible to everyone, but hard copies would be available at community help points and engagement events would be held.

The Bexhill councillor also insisted responses to the consultation would be taken into account.

Diane Smith said she was only partly satisfied with the council’s responses but vowed to keep holding it to account.

“It was a pity Cllr Kenward was not present and to some degree I felt Cllr Hollidge was ‘fencing’ for him,” she said.

“But we will press on in holding the council to account. We have let them know we are watching closely their conduct of the review.”
