Bexhill open gardens support hospice

Proud owners Nicky and Jonathan Little opened their magnificent garden in Whydown to the curious public for the first time this Tuesday taking part in the St Michaels Hospice garden scheme.

A large turn out had been queing from ten thirty outside the couple's beautiful home into which they moved three years ago attracted mainly by the vast area of land which they could cultivate and make their own.

Whilst Jonathan is content to be the 'lawn mowing man' of their three and a half acres it is really Nicky, who has lived in Bexhill all her life, who should be praised for the splendid results of this three year project spending most of her time, about three to four days a week working on her garden in partnership with indespensible landscapers Emma Watson, Lyn Bullen and Barry Martin, a hard grafter, who Nicky says 'gets all the heavy jobs.'

A path running one quarter of a mile long guided a fair number of viewers on a leisurely stroll of the landscape stopping at a number of smaller spaces within the garden itself.

The first port of call along the path is a vegetable garden of pears, cabbages and cauliflowers which despite the presence of the framing metal rails which deter birds have not been entirely safe from troublesome rabbits and badgers.

Continue down the path and you are greeted by a secret garden and peaceful water feature.

But perhaps the most striking part of the garden is the great 'breeze house,' an imposing feature added only last year which seats up to twelve and boasts indoor heating for perhaps those not so long hot summer nights.

St Michael's Hospice provided stalls full of blossoming plants and live musical entertertainment in the form of the Iris Gillett's folk band for those enjoying tea on the lawn.

The Little's own family also got involved showing the public around the garden and providing a homemade sweets stall. When asked if the garden was now complete, Nicky and Emma both replied "We will not stop. It never stops. We are very popular at the Garden Centre!"
