Bexhill: the exchange student's perspective

GERMAN exchange student Sebastian Hein, 16, spent nine days helping out at the Bexhill Observer. In his piece below, he describes some of his experiences in Bexhill, and appeals for residents to help the scheme continue:

EXCHANGE students from Germany came to experience the customs and traditions in England.

The 11 students stayed with families as payingguests for 12 days flying home with hopefully nice memories about England and went home yesterday (Thursday).

In their time here they all experienced practical training in different places, for example King Offa Primary School, Bexhill High and the Observer.

During the training they were set tasks in different areas, dependent on their traineeships, and collected plenty of experiences which they can share among themselves.

The exchange combined with a practical training has been running for 16 years, making it the 16th time that students from Germany are allowed leave to see England first hand.

The students come from the Hollenberg Gymnasium in Waldbroel and are very happy to be here in Bexhill and for most the 12 days was not enough time.

I myself enjoyed the days here in Bexhill at the Observer.

I saw a lot of things and people, for example the workings of the town hall, the members of the Rother District Council and the biggest potholes in all Bexhill.

I had a nice guest-family too, which forgave me an overnight disturbance of their peace and I travelled with a nice group of students and a teacher. I experienced much with them.

The local churches and nice citizens make Bexhill a beautiful seaside town.

All in all I had a good time here and I would be very happy if more students could appreciate the same opportunities so I hope that there will be another exchange next year.

Also the school is satisfied with the programme and thankful towards all traineeships and guest families.

It would be wonderful if the exchange could go on next year too, therefore we need any more people who can supply housing and traineeships.
