Bid for more drinking time

MORE clubbers will be able to dance into the small hours at the Liquid Lounge in Chatsworth Road if Worthing councillors give the go-ahead.

Next Thursday's licensing and control committee meeting will decide whether to approve the club's application for its public entertainments licence (PEL) to incorporate the ground-floor Light Bar.

This would mean the Light Bar sharing the main club's closure hours of 2am Monday to Saturday and 10.30pm on Sunday.

Connecting the two operations would mean the nightclub being able to accommodate a maximum permitted number of 810 people, compared with the present 650.

One letter of objection has been received, with the writer claiming that the expansion would result in more disturbance and litter in the area.

The council's officers say that more sound insulation would be needed if the application were approved.

Further information has been requested by the police, who will be attending next Thursday's meeting.

Also on the agenda will be an application from Gary Cox for a PEL for the function room at the Half Brick pub in Brighton Road.

It would allow entertainment, including live music, karaoke and occasional dinner/dance evenings, until 11pm Monday to Saturday.

Four letters opposing the PEL have been received by the council, and another said the licence should operate on only three nights a week.

The complainants' main fears are of excessive noise and the danger of more "undesirable characters" coming to the area.

One writer said: "We, the public, vote you on the local council as our public servants. Let's see what you can do about this proposed latest torment, and truly hope you will fight our corner to prevent this proposal going through."

Mr Cox says in his application that the function room was built with public entertainment, with low-key music, in mind and it was sound-proofed to protect adjoining properties.

Committee members are being told that approved sound insulation and noise control should be a condition of acceptance.
