Bid to cut speed limit in residential street

THE speed limit could be cut in a residential street following a campaign by residents.

Residents in South Street, Lewes, put 'Slow Down South Street' posters in their windows and handed in a petition to East Sussex County Council calling for traffic calming measures and a reduction in the speed limit from 30mph to 20mph.

Rupert Clubb, East Sussex County Council director of transport and environment, recommended the speed limit be reduced to 20mph.

He also said parking bays could be moved as a traffic calming measure, but this would mean a reduction in the number of car parking spaces.

A final decision on the plan will be made at a public meeting at County Hall on Monday (January 28).

A council report stated : 'The Lewes 20mph Scheme already includes proposals for a 20mph speed limit in most of the central core of Lewes and it is proposed to extend it to include South Street, which would allow enforcement action to be undertaken to those who exceed the limit.'

The layout of parking bays could be altered to achieve traffic 'calming' but this would be likely to reduce the number of parking spaces in South Street, it added.
