Bid to get Listed status for Grand Hotel

OLD Town Preservation Society has been working to get the vacant Grand Hotel made a Listed building, it revealed this week.

But it will not stop talks continuing with developers who want to demolish the building and built 30-luxury flats in its place.

The society s committee is worried the Edwardian landmark will be lost.

Owners Princess Hotels Management want Rother council to agree to demolition of the 99 year-old building and its replacement with the flats.

The society s action puts it on a collision course with some Rother councillors who are coming to the conclusion that better a modern block in a conservation area than a derelict building on a main approach to the town centre.

Preservation Society chairman Michael Kent confirmed this week that the society has been negotiating for the Grand to be Listed since soon after its closure as a hotel shortly before Christmas last year.

We put for Listing with English Heritage and they are going to make a decision on, I think, October 16.
