BIG BOOST TO RECYCLING

IT is time to get plastic fantastic as a new recycling initiative comes to Uckfield.

Kerbside plastic recycling has been introduced this month by Wealden District Council, as part of its CROWN (Composting and Recycling Our Waste Now) scheme.

WDC Cabinet member for Health and Public Safety Cllr Pam Doodes, said: 'The public wants to see more resources put into recycling, and plastics is one area where we can make a big difference.

'Wealden families throw away 470 tonnes of plastics each year. Instead of ending up in land-fill sites, it could be reused as carrier bags, bin liners, plastic piping, window frames, building insulation, DVD cases, garden furniture and fibre filling for sleeping bags. At the same time it will mean a big saving on fossil fuels and energy.'

She added: 'Plastics recycling makes sense locally, too. If people carry on using landfill sites as they do now, East Sussex's main sites will be full up in three years time.'

Households have been issued with a large white bag to be used for kerbside collection and the reusable bag will not just be for plastic bottles, but for cans and foil too. However, at present the scheme cannot take yoghurt pots, margarine containers, fruit and meat containers, bubblewrap or plastic pots and toys, due to the composition of the plastic.

White bags, blue boxes and green waste will be emptied at the same collection, with non-recyclable waste collected on the alternate week.
