Biker marks the longest day with ride of his life

A Bognor Regis biker will be marking the year's longest day with the longest ride of his life.

Owen Sawyer will be in the saddle of his Honda ST1300 Pan European motorcycle for 650 miles.

He will be covering the distance between Edinburgh and the famous Ace Cafe in London on June 20 and June 21 in aid of charity.

He and some 50 other motorcyclists will be travelling via Belfast, Dublin and Cardiff in just 24 hours.

He is aiming to raise 2,000 for Make-A-Wish to give children and young people fighting life-threatening illnesses the chance to indulge their dreams.

Mr Sawyer, 34, of Arun Road, said: "It will be a big challenge to get the ride done in the time.

"It's one hell of a ride but I'm looking forward to it. Those who are taking part are mostly members of an online forum and it will be nice to meet people I have spoken to only on the internet."

Scaffold tube straightener Mr Sawyer has been a motorbike fan for at least 12 years. He puts his love of life on two wheels to good use at nights.

As the secretary of a Sussex group of bikers, he helps the NHS between 7pm and 6am with urgent deliveries of blood samples, scan results or patients' notes.

The voluntary work saves the health service having to pay for taxis or couriers and Mr Sawyer has spent the past 15 months regularly performing the vital role.

Anyone who would like to sponsor him should go to the www.thelongestday.org website.
