Bladder and kidney cancer roadshow visits Hastings

The ‘blood in pee’ roadshow will be in Priory Meadow shopping centre on Thursday and Friday (February 25-26), one of the first stops in the 85-stop, five-week tour.

In Hastings, approximately 14 people die from these illnesses each year, according to figures released by Public Health England.

As a part of the roadshow, nurses will be on hand to provide people with free, confidential advice and answer questions.

Dr Michael Baker, Public Health England’s deputy director of healthcare public health in the South East believes the roadshow will be doing vital work for the communities it reaches.

“Awareness is crucial, because the earlier cancer is diagnosed, the higher the chance of survival,” he said.

“The roadshow is a great way for individuals to learn more about these cancers and the symptoms and the team will be on hand to answer any questions they may have.”

Nicholas Owen, BBC journalist and radio presenter, was diagnosed with kidney cancer in 2002.

As a survivor, he supports the campaign’s message of not ignoring what you see in your toilet bowl.

“Don’t delay, the sooner you speak to your GP, the sooner you know what you’re dealing with,” he said.

The roadshow encourages everyone to ‘look before you flush’ – especially women, who may be less likely to do so.
